My dad wanted to have the oil in the gearbox changed as he’s approaching 45k miles and the service adviser advised aga inst it. Is there any reason why they would advise against it? I find this strange as BMW advises changing the oil in the gearbox in my M3 every 45k miles.

Find a new service advisor...
A lot of places tend to treat auto and DCT/DSG trannies like they’re the Ark of the Convenant, but I just tell those Nazis to open it up and take a look for me. I can’t watch.

Because replacing the gearbox gets them more money?
Joking aside, take it somewhere else if this is a BMW recommended service. No good can come from not having it done.

BMW advises so many things.
Get it to a competent Indy who was done the job several times with success. Most of the times, the “Lifetime” oil comes out looking disgusting.

I’ve had a couple situations where service reps have told me not to change fluids/parts - 1) I wanted coolant changed at 60k in my previous car - the guy says, “oh, it will be fine until at least 90k”. I told him to do it anyways. 2) I asked a service rep to put new front rotors on during a break job (first replacement) at 90k - he says, “oh, we can just turn them, they will probably be just fine.” I told him to do it anyways. Just take my money you ding dongs.
